Half-ribby cap

Size: The ribbing makes this cap stretchy, so I imagine this would fit a variety of adult heads. I made it to fit my own huge noggin and come down to cover my ears.

Yarn:

Originally made in Mission Falls 1824 Wool :: 100% merino superwash in Charcoal #04 (sadly, this yarn is discontinued). Any Aran weight wool will do, approximately 50 g / 85 yards

Materials:

  • Double point and 16″ circular needles US size 6/ 4mm.
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:

8 sts and 12 rows = 2 inches

Cast (loosely!!!) on 80 sts with 16″ 4mm needles, place marker and join, being careful not to twist stitches, in order to knit in the round.

*K2, p2* around. Repeat for a total of 8 rounds.

On the next round you’re going to continue the ribbing pattern for the first 40 stitches, then knit in St. st. for the second 40 sts. You might want to place a different colored marker after the first 40 stitches.

*K2, p2* x 10, (place marker, if desired) knit to end of round.

Continue in this manner until cap measures 5 1/2 inches from cast on edge, then begin decreasing, changing to dpn’s when there are too few stitches to fit around circular needles:

  1. *Work stitches as they appear (knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts) for 8 stitches, k2tog.* x 8.
  2. Knit one round without decreasing, working stitches as they appear.
  3. *Work stitches as they appear for 7 sts, k2tog* x 8.
  4. Knit one round without decreasing, working stitches as they appear.
  5. *Work stitches as they appear for 6 sts, k2tog* x 8.
  6. Knit one round without decreasing, working stitches as they appear.
  7. *Work stitches as they appear for 5 sts, k2tog* x 8.
  8. Knit one round without decreasing, working stitches as they appear.
  9. *Work stitches as they appear for 4 sts, k2tog* x 8.
  10. Knit one round without decreasing, working stitches as they appear.
  11. *Work stitches as they appear for 3 sts, k2tog* x 8.
  12. *Work stitches as they appear for 2 sts, k2tog* x 8.
  13. *Work stitches as they appear for 1 st, k2tog* x 8.
  14. *k2tog* x 8.

Break yarn leaving a 6 inch (or thereabouts) tail. Use a tapestry needle to thread yarn through the 8 sts that remain on needles and pull tight. Weave in ends. Put on head and go to play in the snow.
