Thursday evening Annemor Sundbø spoke at the strikkekafe held by the Oslo Husflidslag at Smuget. It was absolutely fascinating - amongst other things, she talked about the symbols in knitting through the ages.
I forgot to bring enough cash to buy her latest book but it's definitely on my wish list now.
Unfortunately, my recollection of what she said is quite fuzzy - what with the protesting and the police and the machine guns and the drums and the gas masks that started happening right outside the window. The occasion? An "informal" meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Oslo this past week.
Eek! Here is a video of the protesters from Blitz and the police clashing rightrightright outside of where we were. What is Blitz? Well, Blitz is a concept similar to the Ungdomshuset in Copenhagen - where eviction caused such riots at the beginning of March. There's more about Blitz at blitz (dot) no but I'll be darned if I'm linking to their page.
I felt trapped and alarmed and frightened, mostly because we couldn't see what was really going on... Karine even saw somebody making a Molotov cocktail right outside the window! Well, we thought it was until we realized it was just a lady pouring something from one plastic bottle into another...
Things settled down pretty quickly after the tear gassing (tear! gas! seeped! into! the! cafe!) and after the streets emptied Husfliden opened up for the knitters...
(More photos here.)
There's nothing like a little yarn shopping to calm the nerves.
And I realized after looking at the pictures that I took, I find myself attracted these days to black and white fabrics. Like those and these ...
Aren't they just gorgeous?

You would not believe me if I told you how happy this makes me. You just cannot imagine. At. All.
Here are the videos, unfortunately without sound, of her win...
And her victory dance.
CONGRATULATIONS HANNA! You have given me goosebumps and moved me to tears...
And I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do with myself next Tuesday night.

...knitting away on an Icarus shawl.
"Wait a minute!" you say. "You're ALREADY making a shawl!"
Well.
Here's what happened:
In fact, she, I and Fireball are having an International Icarus Along! OLPP has cast on with her Tilli Tomas silk and kelp yarn and Fireball has been shopping for Sea Silk. I pulled some Evilla out of the stash and started up and behold! The color! She is changing!

Made with 20/2 weight Tussah-silk from Borgs Vävsgarner. According to Fabulous Yarns...
The count used for spun silk yarn is the metric count system, used for cotton, linen and wool. In determining spun silk yarn, 1 gm (1/28 of an oz) is the stable figure. One metre (39 inches) of yarn weighing 1 gm is 1 mt count or a #1 yarn. A #10 silk is 10 mt/1 gm and has 10,000 mt/kg. This translates to 4,970 yd/lb.A pair of numbers identifies the size of plied yarns. A 20/2 spun silk is comprised of two strands (bottom number) of a #20 (top number) yarn. The 20 indicates that each strand is 20 times finer than a #1 silk, which has 497 yd/lb. To calculate the yardage of any spun silk yarn, multiply the yarn size by 497 and divide by the ply number. A 20/2 silk has 4970 yd/lb. The higher the number e.g. 20, 30, 60 the thinner the yarn and greater the yardage.
I think I get it, but dang - could that be more complicated??

I am sad that Cork has been discontinued. It's a very cuddly yarn. Which has made a very cuddly sweater. Perfect for cuddling.
